One of the most persistent misconceptions about religion is the assumption that all major faiths understand “truth” in the same way. People often speak about Judaism, Christianity, and Islam as if they are merely different versions of the same theological structure. They are not. While all three traditions are rooted historically in the ancient Near East and all make claims about divine revelation, prophecy, morality, and human purpose, their relationship to truth, conversion, salvation, and universal obligation differs profoundly.

Christianity and Islam evolved into universal missionary systems. Both developed expansive theological frameworks claiming that ultimate truth and salvation require adherence to their specific revelation. Christianity centered this around belief in Jesus as the son of God, and the messiah. Islam centered it around the finality of Muhammad’s revelation and the submission of humanity to Allah through Islam. Both traditions therefore developed strong universalist impulses. Their theological logic naturally pushed outward toward conversion, expansion, and the eventual transformation of humanity into a single religious civilization.

Judaism took a very different path. Judaism unquestionably claims that the God of Israel is real, that revelation occurred, and that the Torah represents a covenantal relationship between God and the Jewish people. But Judaism historically did not conclude from this that all human beings must become Jews in order to live righteous lives or attain divine favor. That distinction fundamentally shaped Jewish civilization, Jewish law, Jewish attitudes toward outsiders, and Jewish survival itself.

Understanding this difference requires examining not only theology, but the deeper architecture of the Jewish worldview.

Judaism’s Truth Claims

Modern people sometimes attempt to soften Judaism into a vague ethical humanism in order to make it fit contemporary pluralism. That is historically inaccurate. Classical Judaism absolutely believed that certain things are true and certain things are false.

The God of Israel is described not merely as a tribal deity but as the creator of the universe. That is an extraordinary theological statement when viewed in historical context. It means that Judaism did not require humanity to become Jewish in order to be acceptable to God. And that alone separates Judaism sharply from many classical Christian and Islamic formulations.

Judaism Did Not Build a Conversion Empire

The difference becomes even clearer when examining attitudes toward conversion. Christianity and Islam historically developed powerful missionary structures. Christianity spread through preaching, empire, theological universalism, and eventually global evangelism. Again, the Rambam serves as an important example. He deeply engaged Aristotelian philosophy, Islamic intellectual traditions, medicine, and logic while remaining thoroughly committed to halachic Judaism.

This did not mean Judaism regarded all religious doctrines as equally valid. It did mean Judaism did not assume that every insight outside Torah was spiritually contaminated. That distinction matters enormously.

Christianity and Islam Universalized Revelation

Christianity and Islam transformed the idea of revelation into universal theological obligation. Christianity interpreted the covenant through Jesus and ultimately expanded beyond Jewish national identity into a religion aimed at all humanity. The Great Commission in the New Testament explicitly commands disciples to spread the faith to all nations. Salvation increasingly became linked to belief in Christ.

Islam similarly framed itself as the final and complete revelation for humanity. Muhammad was understood not merely as a prophet to the Arabs but as the seal of prophecy for all mankind. The Jewish Goal Was Survival and Sanctification, Not Domination

Judaism’s primary historical project was not converting the world. It was surviving while preserving a covenantal civilization under often hostile conditions. Jewish law focused intensely on communal continuity, ethical conduct, ritual life, learning, memory, and sanctification of ordinary existence. The central Jewish question was rarely “How do we conquer the world?” but rather “How do we remain faithful while living inside empires larger than ourselves?”

This produced a civilization oriented around study, law, argumentation, ritual practice, family continuity, and communal resilience rather than imperial missionary expansion. Even messianic visions in Judaism generally imagined a future where nations recognize God voluntarily, not necessarily where everyone becomes ethnically or ritually Jewish. The prophets envision moral transformation, justice, peace, and recognition of divine sovereignty. They do not typically describe the abolition of all nations into a single Jewish identity. That distinction again separates Judaism from later universalist religious systems.

Conclusion

Judaism believes in revelation, covenant, divine law, moral obligation, and the reality of the God of Israel. It rejects idolatry and historically disputed theological doctrines it considered false. But Judaism historically stopped short of claiming that every human being must become Jewish in order to attain righteousness, divine favor, or eternal meaning. That single distinction changed everything.

Christianity and Islam became universal missionary civilizations built around the expansion of revelation to all humanity. Judaism remained fundamentally covenantal, particularist, and nation-centered while still recognizing the moral and spiritual legitimacy of all righteous non-Jews.

The intellectual history of early Christianity is often presented as a linear unfolding of divine truth: Jesus teaches, the apostles transmit, and the Church Fathers clarify. That narrative unfortunately is complete bullshit and it collapses under simple scrutiny. What actually emerges from the primary sources is something far more diabolical and far more human, a movement struggling to define itself by appropriating Jewish ideas, rebranding them, and then severing the very roots from which they were drawn. The early Church Fathers did not simply interpret a tradition; they actively reshaped it, often through distortion, selective quotation, and polemical fabrication. Their writings reveal not continuity, but rupture: engineered, defended, and institutionalized.

To understand this process, one must examine the individuals, their historical contexts, and the specific mechanisms by which they constructed a new religious identity while simultaneously delegitimizing its source.

Justin Martyr (c. 100–165 CE): The Invention of Theological Replacement

Justin Martyr stands at the beginning of systematic Christian apologetics. Writing in the mid-2nd century, particularly in the Dialogue with Trypho (c. 155–160 CE), he articulates one of the earliest and most consequential claims: that the Church has replaced Israel as the true people of God.

He does not crudely announce, “lie for the faith.” What he does is more insidious: he opens the door to the notion that strict adherence to factual accuracy is not always required if a higher religious objective is being served.

Once that principle is admitted, the line between interpretation and fabrication becomes dangerously unstable. And when one returns to his historical writing, the consequences are unmistakable. Selection becomes strategy. Omission becomes argument. Arrangement becomes meaning.

Eusebius is therefore not simply biased. He is operating with a justificatory logic that permits the shaping of the past to stabilize the present. He formalizes doctrines such as original sin and develops a philosophy of history that places the Church at the center of divine purpose. Judaism is recast as a relic preserved only as a witness to Christian truth, not as a living, valid tradition.

Augustine’s influence is enormous, precisely because he integrates theology, philosophy, and institutional authority into a single system. By his time, the process of appropriation and reinterpretation is complete. What began as borrowing has become replacement, and what began as debate has become orthodoxy enforced by power.

The early Church Fathers were not neutral transmitters of tradition. They were architects of much falsehood, constructing a new religious identity from inherited materials, often through methods that would not meet the standards of historical or textual rigor today. They reinterpreted Jewish scripture without deference to its internal logic, suppressed competing Christian voices, and aligned their narratives with emerging institutional and political structures.

None of this negates the historical significance of their work. It does, however, require a more honest accounting. The foundations of Christian theology were not laid in a vacuum of pure revelation. They were built in the midst of intellectual, cultural, and political conflict and they bear the marks of that struggle at every level.

To read these figures critically is not to dismiss them, but to understand them as they were: participants in a contested process, not arbiters of uncontested truth.

Every few years, a familiar claim resurfaces in popular discourse: that Augustine of Hippo (354-430 CE) “invented” the concept of just war. It is presented as if moral reflection on warfare began in late antiquity, as though centuries of earlier legal, ethical, and theological traditions had nothing to say about restraint, proportionality, or the conditions under which violence might be justified. That claim does not withstand even minimal scrutiny. What draws people to a religious system is a combination of theological structure, social organization, historical context, and psychological fit. If you reduce it to effort level alone, you may miss the mechanisms that actually drive adherence and conversion.

Start with structure. Islam, as articulated in the Qur’an and developed through Sharia, offers a highly standardized framework: a small number of clearly defined obligations: profession of faith, prayer, fasting, almsgiving, and pilgrimage. The entry point is minimal, reciting the shahada (the declaration of faith: There is no deity except God, and Muhammad is the messenger of God) after which practice is built around a limited set of core behaviors. By contrast, Judaism, especially in its halachic form grounded in Torah and expanded through the Talmud and beyond, is not just a belief system but a total life system. It regulates time (Shabbat, holidays), diet, family law, civil law, and ritual detail at a far higher resolution. That density creates difficulty and friction for both entry and persistence. But “friction” is not the whole story. What matters more is cognitive architecture.

Islam emphasizes submission. Islam actually means submission or surrender to God, with an associated sense of attaining peace through that submission. The theological core is monotheism plus obedience. The system is intentionally streamlined: fewer interpretive layers, less tolerance for internal contradiction, and a strong norm of conformity across communities. That produces clarity. That creates intellectual depth, but it also imposes a high cognitive load. You are not just obeying; you are constantly learning, thinking, and interpreting.

First Timothy belongs to the so-called Pastoral Epistles, which most critical scholars view as pseudepigraphal composed decades after Paul’s death to impose order, hierarchy, and institutional discipline on early churches struggling with authority and cohesion.

These texts are not timeless metaphysical declarations. They are administrative interventions written inside a Roman pagan imperial world obsessed with household order, male authority, and social respectability. They reflect fear of disorder, not revelation. That distinction matters enormously, because once it is acknowledged, the theological structure built upon them collapses.

Jewish Women

From a halachic perspective, the contrast is stark and unforgiving. Judaism has no concept of spousal submission as a religious virtue. Marriage is not hierarchical. It is a covenantal framework of mutual obligation between two adult moral agents. The ketubah exists explicitly to protect the woman’s rights and dignity. A husband is obligated in sustenance, clothing, conjugal responsibility, and honor. Kavod (honor) is demanded, not implied. There is no theology of “headship.” There is responsibility.

The popular Christian “provider–submission” model is not merely absent from halacha; it is incoherent within it. Eishet Chayil (a Jewish woman of valor) is economically active, legally competent, and publicly engaged. The Judge and Prophetess, Devorah (~12th century BCE) leads the nation of Israel. Jewish women own property, litigate, teach, and lead. There is no Jewish category in which moral adulthood is gendered downward.

Beruriah and Ima Shalom, who both lived in the late 1st to early 2nd century CE, during the Tannaic period in the generation after the destruction of the Second Temple (70 CE), are women scholars and fully formed intellectual and moral actors, and not as appendages to male authority. Beruriah, wife of Rabbi Meir and daughter of Rabbi Chanina ben Teradyon, appears in the Talmud correcting sages on grammar and halacha, rebuking students for intellectual laziness, and offering ethically refined readings of Scripture, most famously insisting that “sins should cease” rather than “sinners should die.” Her authority flows entirely from mastery of Torah, and there is not a trace of submission ideology attached to her presence. Ima Shalom, wife of Rabban Gamliel and sister of Rabbi Eliezer ben Hyrcanus, is portrayed with sharp wit and moral intelligence, repeatedly exposing hypocrisy, puncturing false piety, and acting as a strategic counterweight to rabbinic power. Her name, “Mother of Peace,” is almost ironic, because she achieves peace through clarity and courage rather than silence or compliance. Together, these women function as a standing refutation of any claim that Judaism sanctifies female subordination. Chazal assume moral adulthood wherever Torah is found, and authority emerges from wisdom, judgment, and integrity and not from gendered hierarchy.

Christian theology moved in the opposite direction. Beginning with early Pauline communities and accelerating through figures like Augustine of Hippo and later Thomas Aquinas, Roman household hierarchy was absorbed into theology. Aristotle’s chain of being was baptized (God → Man → Woman → Children). Authority was moralized. Obedience was sanctified. Over time, submission ceased to be social order and became spiritual aspiration.

Judaism never made that move. The Patriarch Avraham argues with God. The Matriarch Sarah laughs at God. Chazal argue relentlessly with one another. Disagreement is not rebellion. Argument is not sin. Submission to human authority is never presented as holiness. Responsibility before God is.

This is why these ideologies flourish in certain military-Christian subcultures. They valorize hierarchy, command, and obedience. Authority feels safe. Clear roles reduce ambiguity. Religion is recruited to reinforce an existing power structure rather than to challenge it. God becomes an endorsement stamp.

From a halachic standpoint, the entire framework fails. It is textually fragile, historically contingent, ethically crude, and psychologically stunting. It replaces covenant with command, dignity with obedience, and moral agency with role compliance. It does not elevate holiness. It diminishes humanity. And hearing it described on a news program made me want to “throw up”.

Conclusion

The visceral revulsion that I and many others feel when hearing these narratives is not emotional excess. It is moral clarity. When adults praise their own erasure as virtue, something has gone profoundly wrong. Torah never asked for this. Halacha never endorsed it. Judaism’s moral grammar assumes responsible adults capable of agency, argument, and partnership. Any theology that demands submission to another human being as a religious ideal is not preserving tradition. It is exposing its own moral emptiness.

One of the most consequential acts in religious history is not conversion, conquest, or even revelation. It is the retrofitting of the past. Islamic theology is built on precisely this maneuver. It does not merely claim spiritual kinship with Judaism; it claims historical ownership of Jewish origins while simultaneously accusing Jews of falsifying their own history. The Israelites, we are told, were really Muslims. The Torah was divinely revealed, then corrupted by Jews. Abraham and Ishmael supposedly built the Kaaba in Mecca as the first house of monotheistic worship. These claims are not peripheral. They are the structural beams holding up Islam’s self-conception as a “restoration” of a supposedly lost Abrahamic faith.

This is not interpretation. It is expropriation followed by indictment. Abraham is relabeled, sacred geography is reassigned, covenantal authority is revoked, and when contradictions surface, the escape hatch is always the same: Islam is right because the Qurʾan says so. But history is not established by proclamation. It is established by chronology, manuscripts, archaeology, geography, and continuity. When Qurʾanic claims about Abraham, the Israelites, the Torah, and the Kaaba are placed beside the Tanach and the historical record, the result is not ambiguity. It is exposure so complete that continued denial becomes farce. This is not a polite interfaith disagreement. It is a fundamental contradiction that deserves intellectual outrage.

The Claim That the Israelites Were Early Muslims

Islamic theology insists that all true prophets and their followers were “Muslims” in the sense that they submitted to God. Moses, the Israelites, and the recipients of the Torah are retroactively reclassified as adherents of Islam, while Judaism is demoted to a later deviation from an original, universal submission to Allah. But this claim collapses immediately under scrutiny. “Muslim” is not a generic philosophical label. It is a term embedded in a specific religious system that arose in the seventh century CE, complete with a defined scripture, legal framework, ritual practice, sacred language, and communal identity. Applying it to Iron Age Israelites is not interpretation; it is historical anachronism bordering on parody.

More damning still, the Israelites never understood themselves as a generic monotheistic population. They understood themselves as a distinct people forged by a singular covenant at Sinai, bound by a specific law, calendar, ritual system, priesthood, land, and national memory. Jewish identity is not an add-on layered onto an earlier abstraction; it is inseparable from the Torah itself. To claim that the Israelites were “really Muslims” requires erasing centuries of continuous self-definition, preserved in texts, rituals, archaeology, and collective memory. That erasure is not evidence-based. It is ideological.

Abraham, Ishmael, and the Kaaba

Nowhere is this ideological rewriting more audacious than in the claim that Abraham and Ishmael built the Kaaba in Mecca as the original monotheistic sanctuary. This assertion is not decorative; it is essential. It anchors Islam geographically, ritually, and genealogically to Abraham. And yet there is not a single shred of historical or archaeological evidence placing Abraham anywhere near Mecca. In Jewish and Christian sources written millennia and centuries before the Qurʾan, Abraham’s life unfolds in Mesopotamia, Canaan, and Egypt. Mecca does not appear. Arabia does not appear. The Kaaba definitely does not appear.

The biblical record is not vague on Ishmael either. His mother, Hagar, was Egyptian. Ishmael married an Egyptian woman. He settled in the wilderness of Paran, a region associated with the Sinai Peninsula, not deep Arabia and certainly not Mecca. This is not a gap in the record; it is a direct contradiction. And then there is the inconvenient historical fact that for centuries prior to Islam, the Kaaba functioned as a pagan shrine housing hundreds of idols worshipped by Arabian tribes. If Abraham, the archetype of monotheism, built the Kaaba for the worship of one God, how did it become the epicenter of polytheism for generations without a trace of protest, memory, or reform?

The Islamic answer is always the same: corruption. Jews corrupted their scriptures. History was falsified. Memory was erased. But corruption on this scale, total, universal, perfectly coordinated across continents and centuries, would represent one of the most successful conspiracies in human history, executed without evidence, documentation, or dissent. The implication is unavoidable and deeply embarrassing: either divine protection failed catastrophically and repeatedly, or the story was constructed after the fact to legitimize an already existing cultic site. Theology demands the former. Evidence screams the latter.

The Allegation That Jews Corrupted the Torah

This same pattern reappears in the allegation that Jews corrupted the Torah. Islam affirms that the Torah was originally revealed by God to Moses, but insists that Jews later altered it, necessitating the Qurʾan as a final, untainted revelation. This accusation is not incidental; it is the engine of Islamic supersessionism. Yet it is precisely here that the historical evidence is most devastating. Jewish textual transmission is among the most meticulous in human history. The Dead Sea Scrolls, dating from the third century BCE to the first century CE, demonstrate extraordinary consistency with the Masoretic text preserved by Jewish communities across continents and millennia. There is no evidence of doctrinal rewriting, theological sanitization, or coordinated alteration.

If one is genuinely interested in textual instability, disputed recitations, missing verses, and contested canons, the Qurʾan itself provides the far richer case study. Early Islamic sources openly record disputes over variant readings, missing passages, and competing codices in the generations following Muhammad’s death. The canonization attributed to the caliph Uthman was not preservation; it was consolidation enforced by political power. Rival manuscripts were destroyed. Alternative readings were suppressed. A single authorized version was imposed across a rapidly expanding empire. Even after this process, debates over qirāʾāt, abrogated verses, and lost material persisted for centuries within Islamic scholarship. The Qurʾan did not descend into history as a frozen, universally agreed text. It was fought over, curated, and stabilized through authority. Against this backdrop, accusations of Jewish textual corruption collapse under their own weight. Where Judaism preserved scripture through decentralized, geographically dispersed communities bound by exacting scribal discipline, Islam required imperial enforcement to arrest textual plurality. The contrast is not subtle. It is fatal to the polemic.

This same inversion survives today, no longer as theology but as political method. When Islamist movements commit atrocities, deliberate murder of civilians, rape, hostage-taking, the targeting of children and the elderly, the response is not accountability but projection. Guilt is transferred wholesale to the adversary through accusation without evidence, repetition without verification, and moral outrage detached from facts. What Hamas and allied jihadist groups document themselves is then projected onto Israel through sympathetic media, activist networks, and international forums as though assertion itself were proof. This is not accidental. It is narrative warfare. Accuse your enemy of precisely what you have done in order to exhaust scrutiny and erode moral clarity. The result is moral laundering so brazen it relies entirely on audiences unfamiliar with how propaganda operates.

The bottom line is unavoidable. The Qurʾan appears nearly 2,000 years after the Torah. It offers no manuscript lineage, no archaeological corroboration, and no credible mechanism by which Jews supposedly altered their scripture worldwide in perfect synchrony. The claim of corruption functions not as a historical conclusion but as a theological necessity. It is bluntly and embarrassingly implausible.

Selective Continuity and Theological Borrowing

Islam insists on continuity with earlier monotheism while rejecting the integrity of its sources. It affirms Abraham but relocates him. It affirms Moses but redefines his followers. It affirms the Torah while dismissing its content. This is not continuity; it is selective inheritance combined with denial. If Islam is truly a restoration of an original faith, why does it appear so late in history? Why do its defining laws, rituals, and revelations emerge centuries after the traditions it claims to correct? And why does this restoration require accusing entire communities of deception without evidence?

The internal logic fails. Either God allowed His message to be corrupted universally and uninterrupted for centuries, or the narrative was constructed to solve a problem of legitimacy. There is no third option.

Chosen-ness Rewritten

Judaism’s concept of chosenness is not a claim of superiority. It is a covenantal burden rooted in Sinai and reaffirmed continuously. Islam does not deny that the Israelites were once chosen, but it insists that this status was conditional and later revoked, conveniently transferring divine favor to the Muslim ummah just as Islam emerges historically. This reinterpretation aligns perfectly with Islamic self-assertion and not at all with Jewish or Christian scripture, both of which present the covenant as enduring. Once again, theology replaces history.

Conclusion

The Islamic narrative that recasts Israelites as early Muslims, accuses Jews of corrupting the Torah, and relocates Abraham to Mecca is not supported by evidence. It relies on anachronism, contradiction, and retrospective invention. It demands that Jewish history be rewritten so Islamic theology can stand intact. This does not diminish Islam as a lived faith, but it does mean its claims about Jewish origins, scripture, and covenant cannot be treated as historical fact. They are theological constructions designed to resolve questions of authority long after the events they describe. Assertion is not history. Repetition is not proof. And no amount of confidence can substitute for evidence that simply does not exist.

There is a particular kind of intellectual dishonesty that deserves to be called out plainly, without euphemism or apology. The Christian claim that the Hebrew Bible secretly predicts Jesus is not a misunderstanding, a benign misreading, or an innocent theological disagreement. It is a systematic retroactive fraud. Verse by verse, Christians tear Jewish scripture from its historical, linguistic, and literary context, distort its meaning beyond recognition, and then declare victory over a text they never allowed to speak for itself in the first place. What they call prophecy is not foresight. It is backfilling. It is not revelation. It is theological vandalism.

Every so-called “messianic prophecy” follows the same tired formula. A passage is lifted from Tanach. Its plain meaning is ignored. Hebrew grammar is flattened. Context is erased. The verse is then forcibly hammered into the shape of Jesus centuries after the fact. The result is not interpretation. It is appropriation. And it has been weaponized against Jews for nearly two thousand years.

Take the infamous claim that Genesis 3:15 contains the first messianic prophecy, the so-called “proto-gospel.” In reality, the verse is part of God’s curse on the serpent after the events in the Garden of Eden. It describes perpetual hostility between humans and snakes. People crush snakes. Snakes bite heels. That is the entire meaning. The Hebrew text contains no messiah, no Satan, no cosmic redemption narrative. Christians later hijacked an ordinary metaphor and inflated it into a grand blueprint of salvation. The fatal flaw is obvious: if this verse were the foundation of redemption, why does God never reference it again anywhere in the Hebrew Bible? Because it was never about Jesus. It was never about salvation. It was about snakes.

The same sleight of hand appears in the treatment of Melchizedek. In Genesis 14, he is a local Canaanite priest-king who blesses Avram and disappears from the narrative almost immediately. There is no eternal priesthood, no theological system, no messianic lineage. The Torah does not develop him further because there is nothing to develop. The Book of Hebrews invents an eternal Melchizedekian priesthood for one reason only: to bypass the hereditary Jewish priesthood that Jesus did not qualify for. Psalm 110 uses Melchizedek poetically, not literally, and no rabbinic source ever turns him into a Christ figure. This is not exegesis. It is theological gymnastics designed to solve a Christian problem by rewriting Jewish scripture.

Genesis 22, the Binding of Isaac, is perhaps the most grotesquely inverted of all these claims. The story is a polemic against human sacrifice. God intervenes at the last moment to stop it. That is the point. God provides a ram, not a future messiah. The text is explicit. There is no lamb of God, no substitutionary atonement, no salvific blood. Christianity takes a story meant to end human sacrifice and twists it into a justification for the ultimate human sacrifice. It flips the Torah on its head and then pretends this inversion was always there.

The Passover lamb suffers a similar fate. In Exodus 12, the lamb is not a sin offering. It is a national, historical symbol of liberation from Egypt. Its blood marks covenantal identity, not forgiveness. The Torah is precise about sacrificial categories, and Pesach is not one of them. Only later does Christianity transform this symbol of freedom into a magic blood ritual that supposedly saves from divine judgment. Judaism teaches that salvation comes from God’s direct action in history, not from ritualized blood metaphysics.

The bronze serpent in Numbers 21 is another example of desperate allegory. It was a temporary healing device during a plague, nothing more. It was later destroyed by King Hezekiah because people began idolizing it. It had no eternal meaning and no salvific power. The Gospel of John stretches this episode into a Christ allegory anyway, ignoring the Torah’s own rejection of the object. This is not insight. It is theological scavenging.

Isaiah 53 remains the crown jewel of Christian misrepresentation. Isaiah chapters 40 through 55 repeatedly and explicitly identify the servant as Israel, suffering at the hands of nations and ultimately vindicated by God. The singular language is collective, a common biblical convention. Missionaries cherry-pick verses, sever them from context, ignore the surrounding chapters that directly name Israel as the servant, and then insert crucifixion imagery that does not exist in the text. Jews never read this chapter messianically until Christianity forced the issue. This is not disagreement. It is deception.

Jeremiah’s “Branch” fares no better. Jeremiah speaks of a future righteous king from David’s line who will actually rule, restore justice, and rebuild Israel. Jesus did none of these things. Christians redefine kingship into something “spiritual” only after the concrete expectations fail. Jewish messianic criteria are unambiguous. A metaphorical ruler who never ruled is not a messiah.

Psalm 118’s “stone the builders rejected” is a national metaphor. Israel, despised and attacked, survives and triumphs through God’s help. The psalm is recited in Hallel to this day. If Jesus were the stone and Jews the rejecters, the outcome makes no sense. Jews endure. The church splinters into hundreds of denominations. History itself refutes the claim.

Jonah’s three days are not a prophecy of the resurrection. Jonah never dies. The story is about repentance and divine mercy, even toward Gentiles. Jesus’ attempt to retrofit this into a prediction of his burial fails even on its own terms, as the timeline does not add up to three days. Worse, Jonah’s message directly contradicts Christian exclusivism. It teaches forgiveness without conversion.

Daniel 7 is explicit. The “one like a son of man” represents the collective people of Israel, in contrast to beastly empires. The chapter itself interprets the vision: the holy ones receive the kingdom. The Gospels lift the phrase and ignore Daniel’s own explanation just verses later. If Jesus received an eternal kingdom, the historical record is devastatingly silent about it.

This pattern of fraud is not accidental. It is systematic. Rip a verse from context. Ignore the Hebrew. Retrofit it to Jesus. Declare prophecy fulfilled. Repeat. When stripped of pious language, these claims collapse into deliberate misreadings. The rage Jews feel is not theological sensitivity. It is the accumulated weight of centuries of being told our own scriptures prove something they plainly do not. This fraud has been used to demean Jewish intelligence, erase Jewish history, and pressure Jews into abandoning their own textual tradition.

What Christians call prophecy is obvious projection. A desperate attempt to graft legitimacy onto a narrative that cannot stand on its own terms. These are not revelations of divine foresight. They are examples of human manipulation, clumsy and transparent. The Hebrew Bible does not belong to Christianity, and it does not whisper secrets it never spoke.

Conclusion

The Christian messianic reading of the Hebrew Bible is not a parallel interpretation worthy of mutual respect. It is a sustained campaign of textual appropriation that depends on stripping verses of language, context, and meaning. Every so-called prophecy collapses the moment the text is allowed to speak in its own voice. The demand that Jews accept these distortions is not dialogue. It is intellectual coercion. Enough. Read the text honestly, and stop pretending it belongs to you.

I actually like Sam Harris, and I was introduced to him years ago by my youngest son, Josh. Sam is smart in the way that matters for public thinkers: analytically sharp, verbally precise, disciplined in his reasoning, and genuinely compelling to listen to. He has a rare talent for taking complicated ideas and rendering them clean, linear, and legible, which is no small thing in an age of intellectual noise. My son Josh, being Josh, has elevated him to near-mythic status, which naturally assigns me the supporting role of mere mortality. I take this with more amusement than irritation. If I’m being honest, the difference between Sam and me is not a hierarchy of intelligence so much as a divergence of temperament and mode. Sam is linear, controlled, and honed like a blade; my own strengths have always leaned toward synthesis, associative thinking, and building ideas across domains that don’t obviously belong together. Different instruments, different music, and I’m entirely comfortable with that, even if my son thinks one of us walks on water (Sam) and the other, alas, does not (me).

Now to the topic at hand. Judea Pearl was recently a guest on Sam Harris’s podcast, a conversation that was thoughtful, engaging, and genuinely enjoyable until it arrived at a claim that stopped me cold. Pearl and Harris are often treated as avatars of the modern atheist intelligentsia: figures who wear rationalism as both credential and shield while speaking with confidence about civilizations whose very existence was forged by religion. Pearl is a towering computer scientist, rightly celebrated for his foundational work on causal inference, and he is also the father of Daniel Pearl, the Wall Street Journal reporter brutally murdered by Islamist terrorists in Pakistan, an atrocity that understandably shapes his moral urgency, his public posture, and his sensitivity to religious violence. Harris, for his part, is a career polemicist whose intellectual ascent came through sustained attacks on religion as a civilizational toxin, positioning himself as a defender of Enlightenment reason against what he views as faith-based delusion. Both men are openly hostile to traditional religious frameworks, both insist on moral seriousness without metaphysics, and both take pride in having escaped what they see as the irrationality of belief. Yet when they turn their attention to Judaism and Israel, they perform an extraordinary sleight of hand: they seek to defend Jewish legitimacy while amputating the very religious covenant that created Jewish peoplehood, law, memory, and attachment to land in the first place. The result is not clarity or sobriety, but distortion: an attempt to translate a covenantal civilization into secular language that simply cannot carry its historical or conceptual weight.

Judea Pearl’s specific claim on the podcast was that the Jewish claim to the Land of Israel has “nothing to do with religion” and is merely a matter of “shared memory,” a framing with which Harris readily agreed. The shared memory, as they describe it, consists of biblical narratives, the Exodus from Egypt, David and Goliath, the arc of ancient Israelite history, stories that function, in this telling, as cultural inheritance rather than covenantal obligation. Needless to say, I do not regard this as a daring secular insight. I regard it as a category error of staggering proportions. Judaism is not a people that later acquired a religion, nor a culture that accidentally preserved a mythic homeland through storytelling. Judaism is a covenantal civilization in which peoplehood, law, land, ritual, and theology are structurally inseparable. The claim to the Land of Israel is not an after-the-fact story Jews tell themselves to feel rooted or continuous. It is written into the foundational texts, operationalized through binding law, embedded in daily prayer, and sustained by obligation rather than sentiment. Nostalgia plays no constitutive role here; duty does.

Start with the Torah, because that is where Judaism itself begins. The land is promised to Avraham as part of a divine covenant, reiterated to Yitzchak and Yaakov, and legislated through Moshe. This is not poetic flourish or symbolic geography. A vast swath of mitzvot only function in the land itself: agricultural laws, sabbatical and jubilee cycles, tithes, priestly service, judicial authority, and the entire legal ecosystem that governs collective Jewish life. Halacha is geographically encoded. Remove religion from the equation and you do not merely soften the claim to the land, you erase the legal architecture that makes the claim intelligible in the first place.

Move next to the prophets, who do not speak in the language of shared memory, cultural trauma, or collective psychology. Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel frame exile and return in explicitly theological terms: moral failure leads to exile, repentance leads to restoration, and God returns His people to His land. Strip God from that narrative and the prophetic corpus collapses into incoherence. It is not that religion decorates the story or provides metaphorical coloring. Religion is the grammar of the story. Without it, the sentences no longer parse.

After the destruction of the Second Temple, rabbinic Judaism did not retreat into metaphor, abstraction, or wistful remembrance. It did the opposite. It intensified the land-anchored structure of Jewish life. Daily prayer is oriented toward Jerusalem. The Amidah petitions for the ingathering of exiles and the rebuilding of Jerusalem three times a day. Grace after meals thanks God explicitly for the land. Tisha B’Av is a religious fast mourning the loss of land, sovereignty, and the Beit HaMikdash. Even the Jewish wedding ceremony ends with Jerusalem invoked as a binding condition of joy. This is not folklore or cultural mood music. It is law, obligation, and liturgy, performed daily, across continents, for at least two millennia.
